Oh, how differently people related to death and dead bodies 800 years ago. Take for example the ossuary at the Church of San Bernardino alle Ossa, aka Chiesa di San Bernardino alle Ossa . There used to be a hospital and cemetery there. But when a new, bigger one was built int he neighborhood they closed it down the old one and used the bones of the dead to decorate the side chapel of the church at the same location.
